Martin Scorsese 101

There are some books which are a great beginning for anyone who wants to know about Scorsese. There are many book on his cinema, but I will just mention here the books that are not about specific subjects but about him and his work in general. Later in a new entrance I will talk about other books.

---------------------------------------------------------------
NO PICTURE AVAILABLE

Mary Pat Kelly, “Martin Scorsese: The First Decade”
I just love this book. It is the first important book on Scorsese. It was published in 1980 and it was written during the shooting of “Raging Bull”. It is full of interviews, articles on some of his films and . It has a lot of information on these first ten years which include many films usually forgotten or not seen by people like “Who`s that Knocking on My Door” (1969) or “Boxcar Berta”(1972) or the short films “What’s a Nice Girls Like you Doing in a Place Like This?”(1963), “It’s not Just you Murray¡” (1964) and “The Big Shave”(1967). It is a very candid book written with honesty, The interviews with Scorsese reveal a man profoundly worried about the world and human beings and about what being good means.

Mary Pat Kelly, “Martin Scorsese. A Journey”
This is kind of a follow up to “Martin Scorsese: The First Decade”. Unlike that book, this one is mainly interviews with people who have worked with Scorsese and Scorsese himself. The other difference is that the answers to the interviews are organized by movie. This way you will have all the information on, for example, “Raging Bull” in the same chapter.

---------------------------------------------------------------

David Thompson and Ian Christie, “Scorsese on Scorsese”
This book has just been updated with new interviews. It follows the scheme inaugurated by Truffaut and his famous interviews to Hitchcock. Scorsese talks about every one of his films, about his family, about growing up. If you haven’t read this book you can’t say you understand him. Lacking the comfort of confession he had while growing up, it seems this book waqs his way of letting everything out.

Peter Brunette (Ed.), “Martin Scorsese. Interviews”
These interviews have been gathered from magazine and newspaper interviews and I think some were done specially for this book.

If I had to choose only one I would go for the “Scorsese on Scorsese” book.

The blog about Martin Scorsese.

Ok. I know I am bold for trying, but I will keep this blog in english. The idea is that this is a language spoken or read by most people in the world, so this way I will reach many people.
The subject of this blog will be the cinema of Martin Scorsese. He is the best director in the world and so he deserves that his films are analyzed and discussed and studied. We will try to talk not only about the films but also about books written on Scorsese, anecdotes, news, etc.
I hope everyone enjoys this blog.
All the best,
Arturo Serrano
